Our founder and managing attorney, Sean Coutain, discovered his passion for trial work under the mentorship of Professor Charles Ogletree at Harvard Law School’s Criminal Justice Institute. Before founding Seattle Defense, Mr. Coutain spent nine years at two of the world’s most prestigious law firms—Skadden and Proskauer—where he advised corporate boards, compliance committees, and senior executives facing serious criminal and regulatory investigations.
He later served as a public defender, representing clients charged with everything from misdemeanors to homicide. That experience broadened his perspective and strengthened his commitment to delivering principled, high-quality advocacy regardless of a client’s background or resources.
Mr. Coutain has worked on high-profile matters involving major corporations and public figures, including Major League Baseball’s home-run record holder Barry Bonds, Brocade CEO Gregory Reyes, and companies such as Meta, Snap, McAfee, Broadcom, Credit Lyonnais, Merrill Lynch, and Applied Materials. These demanding matters forged the rigorous work ethic and attention to detail that define our firm today.
